Morgan hypothesized that eye color gene is located on the X chromosome: w = mutant allele w + = wildtype allele Genes located on a sex chromosome exhibit unique inheritance patterns.

Morgan reasoned that body color and wing size are usually inherited together because their genes are on the same chromosome. Genes located on the same chromosome that tend to be inherited together in genetic crosses are “linked” genes. Small number of nonparental phenotypes indicated that some mechanism occasionally breaks the linkage between genes on the same chromosome.
