When the traffic is high, the number of collisions is also high. Therefore due to the large number of collisions, a lot of packets have to be retransmitted .Thus, the throughput goes down after reaching a peak value. When the traffic is low, the throughput is low as the links are not completely utilized. Throughput= Data transmitted reliably / Time taken When the traffic is low , the time taken to transmit the data increases, so the throughput goes down. Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude by saying that increase in traffic can increase throughput only to a certain point after which collisions become critical and throughput starts going down.
