Explain the purpose and process of reagent standardization Identify the role of thiosulfate ion in the reaction system Describe why it is necessary to begin titrating immediately following H 2 SO 4 addition Apply stoichiometry to determine the molarity of NaClO in bleach Apply dimensional analysis methods to determine the percent of NaClO by mass in bleach Important Definitions Oxidation: loss of electrons Reduction: gain of electrons Oxidizing agent: reactant which performs oxidation (Gets reduced by electron gain) Reducing agent: reactant which performs reduction (Gets oxidized by electron loss) Titration: laboratory technique whereby the composition of an analyte is determined volumetrically by addition of a standardized reagent. Titrant: reagent of known concentration added from a buret in volumetric analysis Analyte: chemical species under analysis in a laboratory investigation Accuracy: proximity of a calculated value to the correct or actual value Standardization: process whereby the concentration of a chemical is determined within a known degree of accuracy. Bleach an aqueous chemical solution of 3-6% sodium hypochlorite used for whitening, color removal, and bactericides by oxidation.
