Tunya Alexander 12/08/2009 History to 1877 Sec. 022 Chapter 11 Religion and Reform 1820-1860 Wow!!! The Second Great Awakening. Can you believe the women were actually involved in the movement. I enjoyed reading this chapter. I learned a lot of things some of it was negative. It was more positive than the others to me. Human reason, free will. Christian Republicanism and republicanism mingled with capitalism. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Transcendentalism an intellectual movement. The opportunity for the humans to connect with the natural and spiritual world. Transcendentalism meant that Unitarians believed that God was a single being, not combined of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. In 1832, Emerson rejected all organized religion. Communalism and Urban Popular Culture. The communalists consisted of farmers and artisans looking for help during great depression. This was called the Panic of 1837 and it last about seven years.
