Tunya Alexander 12/08/2009 History to 1877 Sec. 022 Chapter 12 The South Expands: Slavery and Society 1820-1860 The fight for the constitution was a grim one. As far as slavery goes it mentioned the ones that are not free. Colonization slaves went to Africa. Slavery and Society. Slaves were worth three times as much to the cotton of sugar planter. At this point I thought that slavery would never be over during the 1800s. Re-established slaves in the west for cheaper territory. From east to west through slave trading. Usually through sugar and rice plantations inland grew these crops because the grew the best. Rice was extremely hard to work and it worked the slaves really hard. They had to work from sun up to sun down, without a break this was so sad. In order to work the land for profit the whites needed a lot of slaves. Whites sold slaves in the slave trade, because tobacco was not making a lot of money during this time. Other forms of slavery was the agricultural laborers, domestic slaves, and industrial laborers. In 1850 the cost of a slave had gone up from $200 -$400 to $500.
