MID-TERM: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE 2 1. What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrasts within it provide symbolic summary of the film? The title is referring to Jamal, who as a child is constantly referred to as a dog or slumdog. He grew up extremely poor and was lucky for a night with food, clothing and shelter. Jamal ends up winning the show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, and it is unlikely for anyone to win the show, much less a boy from the slums of Mumbai. 2. Early in the film we see the young Jamal dive into a latrine pit to steal a glimpse at a visiting movie star. How does his single-mindedness to see this movie star reveal his determination? This scene illustrates his determination because he does whatever it takes to see the movie star and get his autograph. He gets locked in the stall by his brother and has no other way to exit than to drop down into the latrine pit. He is covered in waste and because no one wants to touch him he is able to walk right up to the star and get his autograph. 3. What other examples do you see in the film of his determination? He illustrates his determination time and time again while searching for Latika. Since Latika is always being held captive by dangerous men, Jamal’s determination and love are vital to get her back. He shows his determination many times during the film by risking his life to get her back. As a teen, he and his brother Salim risk death by rescuing Latika from Maman who was going to sell her virginity to the highest bidder. After he loses her again, Jamal waits years before he is able to find her. He shows determination again when he must steal her away from Javed, who is a dangerous gangster that is abusive and yet covetous of Latika. Jamal knows that Javed will kill him if he catches him, but he is determined to get Latika back. 4. In the film, the theme of destiny is a central theme. What does it mean that all Jamal’s desires are just out of his reach? It means that in order to get what he wants he will have to work extra hard. He always seems to have people, like Salim, Maman, and Javed, which are trying to

However, he can never seem to hold on to her for long. She is always held captive by men who want her for their own greedy reasons. He must work extremely hard and risk his life numerous times to get her back. Jamal’s desire to get Latika is only achieved through his sheer determination. He loves her and as long as he has Latika, he will be happy and find a way to survive. 5.
