o How and when strategies are used and whether they are combined with  more sophisticated techniques are the key issues  o Good strategic thinking should be judged on the “elegance” of the  outcome as well  Planfulness o Some individuals are highly planful and reflect on the task at hand before  they initiate specific actions  If these individuals really find planning to be second nature then they  are behaving skillfully rather than strategically Conditional Strategy Knowledge o Good strategic thinkers consider the strengths and weaknesses of various  strategies in light of task analysis  o The conditional knowledge that students need to ponder has more to do  with themselves as learners than with the material they are reading or  studying  Personalization and Modification of Strategies Extensive Strategic Repertoire o It is essential that students’ strategy toolkits be stocked with both domain- specific and general strategies o Domain-specific strategies are the tools expressly crafted for a particular  job o General strategies are essentially mental tools to keep handy and use  whenever the exact tool is not available for a particular problem-solving job
