What Do Teachers Need to Know About Assessment? 15:22 Teachers at all levels need foundational knowledge of and skills in educational  assessment Competencies need to encompass the breadth and the depth of educational  activities Teachers Should Be Skilled in Choosing Assessment Methods Appropriate for  Instructional Decisions There are many purposes for and forms of assessment, just as there are  many factors that can influence the quality of such assessments  Teachers need to consider the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial  characteristics of their students when they weigh their many assessment  options Teachers’ goals come into play in their decision about what assessment  methods seem viable for a given situation  The selection of appropriate assessment involves groups of teachers,  administrators, and evaluation experts o Clearly specify the purpose for testing, as well as the population being  tested o Identify tests that match both the purpose and the target population o Examine sample questions and consider the procedures involved in  administering each identified test o Search manuals for evidence that the tests result in valid and reliable  outcomes o Look at critiques and reviews from external sources other than the  publisher o Select the measure that most closely matches instructional goals, student  population, and teacher expertise
