Principles of Contraception 21:04 Birth control: The practice of managing fertility and preventing unwanted  pregnancies Conception: The fusion of ovum and sperm, resulting in a fertilized egg, or  zygote Contraception: The prevention of conception through the use of a device,  substance, or method Contraceptives: Any agent or method that can prevent conception Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Any of several contagious diseases  contracted through intimate sexual contact Barrier methods: A contraceptive that acts as a physical barrier, blocking the  sperm from uniting with the egg Hormonal methods: A contraceptive that alters the biochemistry of a woman’s  body, preventing ovulation and making it more difficult for sperm to reach an  egg if ovulation does occur Natural methods: An approach to contraception that does not use drugs or  devices o Requires avoiding intercourse during the period of the woman’s menstrual  cycle when an egg is likely to be present at the site of conception and the  risk of pregnancy is greatest Surgical methods: Sterilization of a male or female, to permanently prevent  the transport of sperm or eggs to the site of conception  Contraceptive failure rate: The percentage of women using a particular  contraceptive method who experience an unintended pregnancy in the first year  of use Continuation rate: The percentage of people who continue to use a particular  contraceptive after a specified period of time
