Psychology 9-29 – Research Methods Story of Clever Hans Intelligent horse that eventually learned like a human, thanks to 4 years of schooling Psychologist learned that Clever Hans only used visual cues from those around the horse to answer the questions A cautionary tale about not using the Scientific method (expecting Clever Hans to succeed, therefore accidentally gave Hans the answers) o Use of ‘Blind Observers’ would solve it How mental shortcuts can get us lost… Heuristic is a mental shortcut o Helps the mind sort through info o Works sometimes, not all Two types of heuristics o Representative o Availability (whether or not the info is available (shark attacks in news more than falling parts)) Cognitive Bias – Overconfidence o People think they can do things in shorter time than reality Three types of Cognitive Bias o Overconfidence o Confirmation bias o Hindsight bias The Scientific Method 1.
