2 Criteria for a Scientific Study Systematic empiricism – Phenomena must be objective and observable – Studies must be carefully controlled and include objective measurements Public verification: Others must be able replicate and verify the findings Testability: Questions must be falsifiable and must be tested empirically Hypothesis: An expectation of the results of an experiment; an “educated guess” based on previous research, review of the literature Operational definition: Clear description of what is being measured; reliability issues Formulate a Hypothesis Theoretical Perspectives Theories differ from hypotheses! A hypothesis is an expectation of the results of an experiment; an “educated guess” based on previous research or review of the literature • Two functions of theories – Organize and integrate existing information into coherent, interesting, plausible accounts of how children develop – Generate testable hypotheses or predictions about child behavior
