14:36 Civil War – 1900 “The real war will never get in the books” – Walt Whitman WE think of it as a good war, slavery was abolished. But it was also a bad war in terms of deaths and numbers. 600,000 people died in this war, only a population of 31 million people that was a devastating blow to the population. Memorial Day A racetrack for horse racing in Charleston was transformed into a cemetery for union soldiers. o This started Memorial Day, with people going to decorate the graves and remember the fallen. The civil war was a failure of democracy – people should not be killing each other to solve their issues. Right after the civil war some radical republicans insisted on punishing the south and protect and assist the newly freed slaves. In Feb of 1877 a secret deal was made to let a republican win and also told federal troops had to leave the southern states.

14:36 1870-1890 – a critically important period even though no specific events happened. It’s important for business, immigration, urbanization, W.E.B Dubois – says that the problem with the 20 th century is the problem with the color line. The New South Leading southerners had a sense that the south had to modernize. Others wanted to play that down, calling for transportation, factories, get northern capital flowing in. The editor of the Atlanta Constitution would give speeches to northern cities selling it and fully integrating it into the national economy. Booker T. Washington – going to Atlanta, going to the center of New South ideas. The New South idea required the idea of reconciliation. Promoted the idea of reconciliation. The structures of race that were being formed in this period go beyond the simple ideas of racism. o American popular culture, mass media, memory was structured in racial terms. “racial formations” o Slavery had been an accepted institution, enjoyed by whites and blacks alike. o There was a rise in the “nostalgic view” of slavery during this time. People missed it. Segregation is still very uneven throughout the country – the US is very local so
