SMPA 120 Class Notes  29/11/2010 07:16:46 How is bias related to public opinion?  Three competing theories to bias in the media:  Sutter- in the middle in terns of media bias- takes an economic approach and  discusses the logical merits Goldberg- journalists for cbs- liberal bias in media Herman and chompsky- news media is used by elites to propagate the status  quo and has a conservative slant  Sutter Main thesis: cant make a rational argument that there is a liberal bias  because the economic incentives to prove that are not present  Defines liberal bias- all major news organizations offer a product that deviates  significantly from the median (middle of population) voter  What distribution is the ideological distribution held by citizens in country? o  a bell curve- larger segment of society resides near center  o news organizations want to line up in the place where they will get the  largest audience (middle)
