SMPA 120 Class Notes  29/11/2010 07:16:52 Bias continued  Herman and Chompsky 5 filters of media  contribute to being a bias – derive from money and power and  what you have at the end of the day is fit to print- sanitized version of the news size, concentrated ownership, wealth and profit orientation of dominate o corporations are interlocked with other large corporations- has clear  preferences and incentives  o clear bias towards the status quo and towards the financial system that  benefits big businesses o news media has agenda setting function and are going to choose  issues and frames that favor the status quo and big business view o even if you have a lot of small outlets there is still pack journalism  occurring  o overall, will affect how journalists relay the news  o main argument: companies that own these media outlets want to  maintain the status quo and information gets filtered out and publish
