THE MORALIT Y OF PORNOGRAPHY 2 Abstract This paper will examine the morality of pornography and explains that based on the prima facie duty of beneficence—or the “duty to improving the conditions of others with respect to virtue, intelligence and pleasure; pornography is therefore acceptable. The consequences of morally accepting pornography will also be discussed.

THE MORALIT Y OF PORNOGRAPHY 3 I. Point of View The history of pornography or erotica can be traced back to pre-modern era. From that point on, there have been many works produced with highly sexual themes. First we have the pornographic images of cave paintings by the ancient humans and the sexual depictions seen in Greek and Roman pottery and sculptures. According to the Merriam Webster’s dictionary pornography is defined as “the depiction of erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement;” erotica refers to “refers to any literary or visual work of art that is erotic in nature.” It comes from the Greek, ‘erotikos’, meaning ‘sexual love.’ Based upon that definition and the prima facie duty of
