Week 2 DQ 1 One of the five elements of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Explain why emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership. Discuss what behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate within the context of leading and managing groups. Provide an example. RESPONSE: According to Huber, 2018 the five main elements of emotional intelligence (EI) include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Self-awareness certainly is vital to not only strong and healthy relationships but as a construct of IE; it is an important component of predicted leader success (Huber, 2018). Someone with strong self-awareness is able to recognize his/her emotions, understand the cause of feelings, takes time for mindfulness, and take necessary actions to manage anger through learned behaviors (Dansal, 2012). In fact, self-awareness gives the ability to empathize and see things from the other person’s point of view. An effective and good leader should be aware of his/her own feelings, weaknesses and strengths in order to incorporate a lot of situational leadership style, where he/she is quite capable to handle things as they arise, and take control of a complex situation (Huber, 2018). This student believes that every person should pursue a journey of self-discovery, self-improvement, reflection, and renewal. By developing a sense of self-awareness we can become more resilient, engage ourselves in healthier behaviors, and provide a better and safer care to our patients. A good example of EI occurred on my unit approximately 6 years ago, our hospital experiences a level 2 code purple, which means we were overfilled above capacity and all hands on deck. All nurses had to report to the staffing office at the end of their shift and many nurses in my department have been away from bedside nursing
