UMI | HDD 2 MASTERS IN BUSINESS ADMNISTRATION (MBA) 1.0. PREAMBLE 1.1. INTRODUCTION The department of Higher degrees of Uganda Management institute is manadated to design and conduct higher degree programmes in management disciplines. However, since its inception, the department has only been running a Masters in Management studies (MMS) with specialisations aligned to the different postgraduate programmes offered by the institute. The Masters in Management studies has been the only outlet for the thousands of students who complete postgraduate programmes at the Institute. Those wstudents who have their career intrest in the popular MBA programme have found their way in other Universities in Makerere Universitys and Uganda Matryrs University- Nkozi. Recent pronouncements in Government have alluded to the need for the Masters in Business Admnistration and 2009 should be the year to exploit these opportunities. The Institute has completed religning its strategic direction for the braod purpose of meeting the demands of different stakeholders in a changing business environment. While the need and desire to start the Masters Programme to meet the demands of our stakeholders in a changing complex enviornment has continously emerged at UMI, no significant steps have been taken in the past to fulfill the desire of everyone. But By Late November of 2008, the members of the Joint Departmental board recommended to this senate that the proposal for the introduction of the Masters in Business Admnistration(MBA) be approved for offer in the 2009/2010 academic year(the minutes of the JDB are provided by the IR). 1.2. JUSTIFICATION FOR AN MBA AT UMI Uganda Management Institute (UMI) was established in March 1992. Its aim was and continuous to be the desire to strengthen the management and institutional capacity of the public, private and non-governmental sectors in Uganda and beyond by offering a blend of short and long courses for junior, middle, senior, and executive level managers; facilitating conferences, seminars and workshops; and providing research, consultancy and distance learning services. UMI is the national center for training, research and

It has an established vision to be a world-class management development institute and a stated mission to excel in developing management capacity. UMI has the following objectives:- 1. To improve knowledge, skills and attitudes of public, private and NGO managers. 2. To provide consultancy services for good governance and sustainable development. 3. To generate knowledge for improved decision-making and policy formulation.
