Running head: Business Strategy Paper Accredo Health Group, Inc. is a subsidiary of Medco Health Solutions, Inc., located in Memphis, TN. As the specialty pharmacy segment of pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) Medco Health, Accredo dispenses high-tech, injectable drugs for chronic and serious illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, pulmonary arterial hypertension and those that have autoimmune disorders. Now they are thinking about acquiring the controversial drug Mifeprex from Danco Laboratories, a women’s health pharmaceutical company. Mifeprex is the "abortion pill." that has been the topic of heated debate among pro-lifers, pro-choicers, and politicians. Since 2000 when the FDA approved Mifeprex, antiabortion group like Concerned Women for America, Christian Medical Association, the American Association of Pro Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists have asked the FDA over and over again to ban Mifeprex, which blocks a hormone that is needed for pregnancy to continue. When followed by another medicine, Misoprostol, Mifeprex ends the pregnancy. The interest groups contend that Mifeprex can cause adverse events, which can lead to serious bacterial infections, fatality, and ectopic pregnancies. Interest groups cite Holly's Law, named in memory of Holly Patterson, a young California woman who had just turned 18 when she died from toxic shock after undergoing a Mifeprex abortion. According to United States Conference of Catholic Bishops spokeswomen Deirdre McQuade, “Eight women are reported to have died in the United States after a Mifeprex abortion, and Mifeprex should be pulled from the market.” The medication reportedly also has the propensity to cause severe bleeding. According to the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists website, “The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) opposes 2
