For the following reaction, write the two half reactions, balance them with electrons, and identify each as oxidation or reduction: Al + Fe 3+ Al 3+ + Fe Oxidation: Al Al 3+ + 3e - Reduction: Fe 3+ + 3e - Fe 2. Galvanized pipes are iron coated with zinc to prevent rusting. When a plumber connects a galvanized pipe to a copper pipe, the copper oxides the Zn coating. This exposes the iron, which quickly rusts due to its proximity with copper and the resulting redox reaction. For the reaction of copper and Zn, write the two half reactions, balance them with electrons, and identify each as oxidation or reduction: Zn + Cu 2+ Zn 2+ + Cu Oxidation: Zn Zn 2+ + 2e - Reduction: Cu 2+ + 2e - Cu 3. The statue of liberty was originally made of a 200,000 lb outer skin of Cu supported by a framework of iron bars. Air oxidized the copper to form CuO (note the copper is now an ion with a +2 charge).
