Discussion 9/30 Political Science is the study of governments Comparative politics is study of different governments…looking for patterns Essentials 1. Qualitative vs. Quantitative 2. Modernization Theory: countries c capitalist society when they become wealthy 3. Correlation vs. Causation 4. Institutions: self-perpetuating, change over time…EX. Baseball, it’s American bureaucracy 5. Democratization: process of political institution becoming a democracy Lecture 10/4 Correlation doesn’t cause causation o Correlation tells you THAT a pattern exists o Causation tells you WHY a pattern exists Electoral Policies To understand how congress works, look at how they get elected Static ambition- how to keep current job?
