Unformatted text preview: COVALENT BONDING Net bonding effect for electrons in red region. COVALENT BONDING LEWIS STRUCTURES What is the Lewis formula or structure for oxygen difluoride, OF 2 ? Procedure: (1) Draw a bond between the central atom and each of the other atoms. The bond represents 2 electrons. The central atom is generally the one which can make multiple bonds and occurs once. F : O : F or F–O–F (The bond is more typically represented by a short line) (2) Compute the number of valence electrons by adding the number of valence electrons for each atom. In this case, 2x7 (for 2F) + 6 (for O) = 20. (3) Try to arrange the electrons around each atom such that the octet rule is satisfied. Each bond counts as 2 electrons. The rest are added as lone pairs of electrons. F O F : -- : i i i i i i i i i i i i Observe, 20 e- are used and the O and each F have 8 e- . LEWIS STRUCTURES What is the Lewis formula or structure for NH 2- ?...
