Mg(NO 3 ) 2 (s) + H 2 O(l) Mg 2+ (aq) + 2 NO 3 - (aq) REVIEW When solid Mg( NO 3 ) 2 dissolves in water it breaks apart into ions. It is a strong electrolyte. Magnesium nitrate is an example of an ionic compound. Typically written as Mg(NO 3 ) 2 (aq), C 2 H 5 OH (l) + H 2 O(l) C 2 H 5 OH(aq) When liquid C 2 H 5 OH dissolves in water it dissolves as intact molecules. It is a nonelectrolyte. (Electrolytes conduct electricity.) Ethyl alcohol is an example of a molecular compound. No change, except ethyl alcohol molecules are now surrounded by water molecules. that is, Mg(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) means Mg 2+ (aq) + 2 NO 3 - (aq)
