11/24/10 The challenges faced by diverse populations America has come a long way in its attempts to treat all people fairly regardless of race, creed, or gender. But we still have a long way to go, which is made clear by the continuing debates over gay marriage, minority un- and underemployment, sexual harassment concerns by women, and a general preference in society for people based largely on their racial and ethnic backgrounds. In the 2003 U.S. Census, for example, the average salary for Caucasians was $45,572 compared to an average for Hispanics of $32,997 and for African Americans, $29,689. (Glicken, 2007, pp. 327-328)
