11/24/10 Child Abuse and Neglect Child physical and sexual abuse and neglect are deeply serious problems in the U.S. In fact, the National Clearing House estimated that 896,000 children were victims of child abuse and neglect in 2002. 60% of child victims experienced neglect Almost 20% were physically abused About 10% were sexually abused About 7% were emotionally maltreated Children aged from birth to 3 years had the highest rates of victimization.

11/24/10 Child Abuse and Neglect (Cont’ Fatalities In 2002, an estimated 1,400 children died because of abuse or neglect. Three fourths (76%) of the children who were killed were younger than 4 years old; 12% were 4 to 7 years old; 6% were 8 to 11 years old; and 6% were 12 to 17 years old. Infant boys (younger than one year old) had the highest rate of fatalities, nearly 19 deaths per 100,000 boys of the same age in the national population. The overall child fatality rate was 2 deaths per 100,000 children.
