Terminology First, let’s get familiar with some terminology: Older adult: refers to those people 55 years of age and older Elderly : 65 and older Very old/old: 85 and older Frail elderly : In need of some type of attention/care from either formal or informal long-term care system or both

Themes There are many themes in society that in many ways may impact the way we perceived aging. Some of them are as follows: Time as the most precious resource . We all will die at the end of the last act. A perception of aging as shameful.

Themes [Cont.] We know less about older adults than we think. That is, we can empathize with children but we have not had the experiences that allow us to understand the old. Connections: older adults are the connection between the past and the present ( keepers of history ).

The Dual Perspective In previous weeks we discussed the Dual Perspective, today, I recommend that you review this handout under “Resources” again. As a way of review, when we use the Dual Perspective we are asked to assess three systems: The Individual System , the Nurturing System , and the Sustaining System . The Dual Perspective  :Statistics [Cont.] 2030: It is calculated that there will be 8.7 - 12 million frail elderly Income 16% of those 65 and older are poor Double jeopardy refers to minority older adults who are penalized for their age and their ethnicity. Latino elderly: While in 1990 they represented 4% or 5% of the population. Before 2050 they will comprise 16% of the U.S. population. Black elderly : They represented 8% in 1990 and it is estimated that they will represent 10% in 2050

The Dual Perspective  :Statistics [cont.] The percentage of older Latinos and Native Americans with incomes below the poverty level is twice as large (22.0% and 20.0% respectively) as elderly Whites. Women 75 and older fare the worst. Almost 38.0% of Latinas and almost 40.0% Black women are below the poverty line.
