Section 1.1 Graphs *Rectangular Coordinate System (a.k.a Cartesian Coordinate System) x-axis – horizontal number line y-axis – vertical number line origin – zero points; point of intersection of the axes Ordered Pair – (x,y); signifies a point in the rectangular coordinate system by designating an x-coordinate and a y-coordinate x-coordinate – first number in each pair; gives distance and direction along x-axis; positive – right, negative-left y-coordinate – second number in each pair; gives distance and direction along the y-axis or line parallel to the y-axis; positive – up, negative - down Plot – locate points in the rectangular coordinate system ORDER IS IMPORTANT! The order in which coordinates appear makes a difference in a points location. Ex . Plotting Points: A (1,7) B (-2, -2) C (0, -4) D (3, 0) Graphs of Equations - graph of all ordered pairs that satisfy the equation solution – ordered pair where when the x-coordinate is substituted for x and the y-coordinate is
