Lecture Notes Bio 109, Fall 2010, Dr. Catherine Loudon Lecture 12 – 10/22/10 – Reflexes, Cardiovascular system 1) Announcements a) Any questions/corrections must be received within 1 week after scores/scantron images posted (clicker scores, quiz scores, test scores) [to edaniels@uci.edu] b) Several announcements about clubs, organizations (see EEE site, UCI clubs tab) 2) Your question a) I have heard that it is good to eat a banana to help with muscle cramps – does that have anything to do with [K+]? i) True that bananas are high in [K+], but increasing [K+] in ECF would INCREASE excitability in neurons and muscle fibers, not decrease it, so that is not the exact explanation. Hypokalemia is associated with muscle weakness AND muscle cramping, so muscle cramping probably due to additional factors. 3) Good sources for reliable information about medical issues include a) Mayo clinic www.mayoclinic.com (in Rochester, MN) b) Centers for Disease Control (CDC in Atlanta, GA) www.cdc.gov
