Unit 3 Lesson 1 - Jefferson's Presidency Lesson Objective:  In this lesson, the student will: analyze how Jefferson’s Presidency affected the political transformation of the developing nation,  particularly in terms of the Louisiana Purchase.  examine the significance of the establishment of the Supreme Court as a co-equal third branch of  government under John Marshall with cases such as Marbury v. Madison in the formation of a new  nation.  The peaceful inauguration of Thomas Jefferson as the third President of the United States on March 4, 1801, was  an important event in American history, because it was the first time under the new Constitution that power passed  quietly from one political party to another.  In his inaugural address, the first to be delivered in the new capital on  the banks of the Potomac, Jefferson affirmed his faith in the wisdom of the people and encouraged the Federalists  to work with the Republicans “in common efforts for the common good.”  Jefferson cautioned his own political  party, the Republicans, that although the majority would rule, it was the duty of government to ensure that the  rights of the minority were protected.   President Jefferson served in a simple and uncontrived manner, avoiding anything that smacked of the pomp and  pretentiousness of European courts.  He wanted to make sure that the role of the President was not confused with  the role of a European monarch.  Jefferson worked to reduce the size and spending of the American government,
