Unit 4 Lesson 4 - The Northwest Territory, Oregon Country, and Alaska   Lesson Objective:  In this lesson, the student will trace the growth of the American nation during the period of  western expansion:  o Northwest Territory  o Oregon Country  o Alaska  Northwest Territory One of the first areas outside of U.S. boundaries to be settled by Americans was the  Northwest Territory .  The  Northwest Ordinance of 1787 allowed for the creation of as many as five states in the northwest portion of the Ohio  Valley on lines originally laid out in 1784 by Thomas Jefferson. Known as The Northwest Territory, the new federal  lands were east of the Mississippi, and between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes. Five states were ultimately organized from the Northwest Territory land: Ohio, March 1, 1803  Indiana, December 11, 1816  Illinois, December 3, 1818  Michigan, January 26, 1837  Wisconsin, May 29, 1848  One provision of the Northwest Ordinance stated that “there shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude  [forced labor] in the …territory.”  Slavery was banned from the Northwest Territory; an issue that would become  increasingly controversial in the years ahead as territories applied for statehood.

The movement of American settlers into the Northwest Territory resulted in conflict.  As Americans began moving  west, American Indian leaders tried to prevent U.S. settlement on Indian lands.  Their protests were ineffective,  causing many Indians to be moved to lands farther west.  Skirmishes between American Indians and settlers and  among different tribes broke out.   The Indians recognized that they needed to work together to resist settlers from taking their land.  Tribes banded
