Course Objectives: Business 111 is designed to provide the introductory business student with five things: 1. An integrative model or framework that demonstrates the role of management in today’s fast paced and ever-changing business environment. 2. An introductory overview to the external environment and how it affects managerial decision making. Topics covered will include an examination of the Canadian financial system, personal and corporate taxation in Canada, personal investing and the role of the stock market, different forms of ownership available to business, corporate structure and governance, business ethics and social responsibility, the process of management, and strategic planning. The concepts will be discussed to form a foundation to build on in Business 121 and further business courses. 3. A basic business vocabulary. 4. Through active participation in the Lab component of the course, the opportunity to both understand and develop many of the interpersonal and managerial skills required of successful managers, as well as the opportunity to develop decision-making, and oral and written communication skills in a business context. Also through the assignment of group projects, the opportunity to both experience first-hand the concepts discussed in class, as well as develop essential group/team management skills. 5. A clear understanding of both the academic and behavioural standards expected of you in business courses at Wilfrid Laurier University. As we are a “professional school offering a professional education” these standards and expectations will be consistent with those of co-op and full-time employers. Methodology: In Business 111 three approaches to learning are used: 1. Text Readings – Your text will provide you with a broad overview to the topics covered in the course. This ‘big picture’ will provide you with a conceptual framework to understand the environmental and functional considerations that impact on managerial decision making, and provide you with the context for material covered in more depth in lectures. The text will also familiarize you with the terminology or ‘language’ of business, and will prove useful as a reference text in later business courses. Extensive notes are not required on this material unless it is specifically assigned for examination purposes, and you will be informed of this in class.
