Anthropology 2 Handout Managing Ethnographic Field Notes Preparation to Take Field Notes Are you dressed appropriately? (consider the environmental conditions and the cultural norms in operation where you will be taking notes) Prime yourself for things to look for, such as: Nonverbal communication Speech exchanges Patterns in dress and conduct Layout of the field site & patterns in the way people use or move about the site Any abnormalities? If so, why are they abnormal? Who is present (gender, class, age, occupation, etc)? Why did they come there? Establish yourself as a researcher from the beginning (that way, people will expect you to ask questions and to take notes) Taking the Field Notes : “Scratch Notes” or “Jottings” Use a small notebook Will taking notes disturb people? If so, how will you take notes? *(This is usually not an issue) Periodically excuse self to write notes in the bathroom Write down a series of words for later mnemonic recall Note the time, location, and conditions Jot down
