Psych -5 03/30 Sensation and Perception Cont. Illusion- miss perception of something that is already out there or physical Hallucination – perception of something that is not out there or physical Question The phenomenon of a mirage is an illusion. Selective attention- pay attention to things you want to pay attention to and ignore what you don’t want to pay attention to (block out a sensation and paying attention to a sensation) Ex: Someone is talking to you while watching TV. Form Perception- a) Figure and ground- a man is the (figure) and the wall behind him is the (ground) b) Proximity- how far objects are close to each other in space are perceived as if they belong together c) Continuity- Tendency to perceive objects as belong together if they appear to form a continuous pattern. Small pieces when put together gives us a pattern. d) Closure- tendency to complete figures with gaps in them. We are going to fill in the gaps. e)
