Axia College Material Appendix E Critical Analysis Forms Fill out one form for each source. Topic: Assisted Suicide Source 1 Title and Citation: Smith, Wesley J. "The Right-to-Die Movement Supports Death on Demand." Current Controversies: Suicide . Ed. Paul Connors. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2007. Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center . Gale. Apollo Library-Univ of Phoenix. 23 Jan. 2010 <http://find.galegroup.com.ezproxy.apollolibrary.com/ovrc/infomark.do? 1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. The principal issues in this article is that their is a belief that people who want to end their life should be allowed to do so. They should be told how to commit suicide so that they can do it properly. Assisted suicide should not just be left as an option for someone who is suffering from an illness that nothing can be done to stop them from having to suffer, but also for people who suffer from mental illnesses. 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. Examples of bias in this article are some people who believe that anyone who wants to die should have the right to take their own life. Then there are people who believe that only people who have an illness that they are going to die from should be allowed to use assisted suicide. 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. If none exist, explain how you determined this. An area that I find is vague is when rational suicide is talked about. I find the idea that a person could gain assistance for suicide because they feel that they have a hopeless condition. By the definition that is given in the article of what a hopeless condition is to vague and it would pretty much garner support for anyone who wishes to end their own life. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. I do find the source to be credible. The author talked to people who are knowledgeable about why people want to commit suicide and how to go about teaching people who whish to do so. 5 Identify and name any rhetorical devices used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. The main rhetorical device that I feel that is used in this article are euphemisms. They are trying to take suicide and make it look like it is something that you are not doing just for yourself but you are also doing it for the good of others. CRT 205

6 Identify and name any fallacies used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I believe that the fallacy used in this article is the appeal to emotions. I feel that the author wants the reader to feel pity for these people who want to take their own lives. 7
