Racial and Ethnic Groups Racial and Ethnic Groups in Spokane Washington There are many different racial groups represented in Spokane Washington. The total population of Spokane according to the United States Census Bureau website (2008) is an estimated 455,204 people and that the dominant race is White. The White population is estimated to be 412,217 people, which is 90.6% of the total population. The second largest race is the Hispanic/Latino population with an estimated 17,633 people, which is 3.9% of the total population. The third largest race is Asian with an estimated population of 10,008 people, which is 2.2% of the total population. The final largest race is African American with an estimated population of 7,318 people, which is 1.6% of the population. These four races play a role in the make up of the Spokane community. The White population of Spokane is mainly consistent of working and middle class Americans with a small upper class population. The majority of employment in the Spokane area is service related especially when it comes to healthcare, and education. Spokane has two local community colleges, and two major universities within in the county. There are also four large hospitals and many other healthcare support businesses. There are also jobs that are professional jobs related to science, management and administrative that makes up a large part of the employment opportunities in Spokane. The White population and the population in general in the Spokane Area is a mix of liberal and conservative there are certain areas of Spokane that are seen as more 2
