The second process that could be implemented would be to use family numbering. Where for example in this case I am assuming that the mother is a single mother and that this is her first born child. So the household would be assigned a unique number identifier and then each member of the household is assigned a 2 digit modifier number that serves as a prefix to the patient number. So lets say that the hospital assigned the number 123456 Since Mrs. Diaz is the head of house hold she would become 01. 12345601 Angel Gonzales would become 02 being the first born child. 12345602 Even though the child has a different last name than the mother the record can be easily found because they can look up Ms. Diaz's chart number through her name and see that her first born child is listed in the family numbering system....
