Grading Rubric for Lab 3 Metabolism INTRODUCTION: 10 pts 1)what is metabolism- sum total of all chemical reactions in the body -anabolism-stores energy through creating large molecules with high energy bonds -catabolism-breaks down these molecules to release energy to be used 2) metabolism is affected by (must have at least 3)- gender, body composition, genetics, food consumption, BSA, physical activity, sleep, age, hormones, body temperature 3) Measure Met. indirectly through oxygen consumption and ratio of O2 consumption to CO2 expiration (Respiratory Exchange Ratio) provides an ideal of the type of fuel utilization (fatty acids versus carbohydrates) 4) Mentioning either caloric intake or METs or R values or VOR rel values, a) male versus female –higher for male b) weight bearing verus non-weight bearing – higher for weight bearing c) increasing intensity- increases with increasing intensity d) increasing weight- increases with increasing weight METHODS: 20 pts -weigh subjects -nose piece, 1 way mouth value, hose –and metabolic cart, True Value 2400
