Gun laws and youth violence In 2007 the U.S. supreme court ruled that a ban on hand guns in Chicago was unconstitutional. Therefore the Chicago ordinance supported by Mayor Richard Daley that had been in effect since 2007 was lifted. The 5-4 ruling, authored by Associate Justice Samuel Alito , is overturns a 7th Circuit decision upholding gun bans in Chicago and Oak Park, a suburb and determined that it was unconstitutional. . The 5 justices agreed the Second Amendment applies to state and local governments, as well as to federal territory. (Hotline on call). The hypothesis is that this ruling has contributed to the rise in gun violence among Chicago’s teens? The fact that the study measures the frequency of gun violence using data from appropriate sources qualifies it as a quantitative study. It will also use data collected from CPS.
