Sara Girolami Teacher: Dawn DiNicola Philosophy 1001-702 October 22, 2010 Free Will: A Necessary Evil Where is God in a world filled with unspeakable evil? This is a question that has been pondered for years and the answer is still a mystery . “Evil is logically inconsistent with the existence of an all-perfect God”(Evil and the moral value of Free will, 395) . An all-powerful God would be able to stop these evils from happening, but evil is still present . The big question is, why is there evil? This problem causes doubts for Christians in their faith about the existence of God . Throughout the Old Testament in the Bible we see a God who is all-powerful, who performs miracles, and punishes the wrong-doers There are multiple ideas about how to explain God’s role in evil, but the one I but my faith in is the argument of free will . God gave us the free will to make our own decisions and through these decisions evil was able to slip into the world . This leads me to believe that free will is the source of evil, but without free will life would be predetermined, which contradicts the existence of evil . William Young’s book, The Shack, clearly illustrates the concept of free will through Mackenzie losing his faith in God while coping with his daughter’s death . Mackenzie Philips (Mack) was a moderately religious man who went through the everyday actions of being a Christian . When his youngest daughter, Missy, was abducted Girolami 1

and brutally murdered this all changed . He began to question his faith and wondered why God would allow his innocent daughter to be murdered . He goes through a period he calls “The Great Sadness” and in the midst of this he receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting Mack to meet him back at the Shack where his daughter was murdered (her body not found) . He returns to the shack were he meets Papa, Sarayu, and Jesus (representing the Trinity) . He has multiple conversations with all three of them and through these conversations he is able to come to terms with Missy’s death and his relationship with the three of them
