What is Stress? Negative emotional state in response to events that are taxing or exceed one’s ability to cope with Approaches to Understanding Stress Stress as a Stimuli Stressors: events or situations that produce stress (disrupt daily functioning) Stress as a Transaction What makes an event stressful Primary appraisal - the initial way that we look at the situation – is it harmful Secondary appraisals can we cope with the event Coping Problem focused – efforts to alter or eliminate stress Example: confronting seek social support, planful problem solving Emotion focused – regulating the negative emotional consequences of the stressor, followed by a change in behavior Example: self-controlling, distancing, positive reappraisal,… Stress as a Response
