Biting Arthropods FLIES Psorophora mathesoni Biting Arthropods BUGS Julie Caplinger BUGS ? HEMIPTERA ? WHAT’S THAT ? Ptera = Wing Hemi = Half Some “Hemiptera” are wingless – like the bed bugs ! HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ± Bedbugs have plagued humans for thousands of years ± Originally a problem for the wealthy ± Enhanced by fire and heated homes ± Present in literature as far back as 400 B.C.E. DECLINE OF BEDBUGS ± Three major factors: ± DDT use in 1950s ( broad spectrum insecticides ) ± Improved vacuum cleaners ± Changes in home construction Sleep tight, and don’t let the bedbugs bite! Ropes supported the upper mattress, and were wound tight before bed using a wooden key Bedbugs would inevitably reside in the organic bedding of the mattress, which was periodically removed from the home and burned to reduce infestation Alternatively - & probably correctly - (because it is boring) Tight = “sound” …. . So sleep “tight” STATUS SINCE 2000 ± targeted pest treatments + bans, frequent travel have likely led to a bedbug resurgence in the U.S. ± 300% increase in cases from 2000 to 2001 ± 70% increase in cases in 2002 and 2003 ± Orkin had a 20% increase in bedbug calls in 2004
