The old regime 2 The old regime An area where current revisionism sustains a little revision in this volume has to do with the continuities between the French Old Regime and the Revolution. It is not the fact of such continuities that is in question here. All of the contributors to this volume are dixhuitièmistes or specialists in the Old Regime rather than in the Revolution proper and, like Tocqueville, are on the lookout for ways in which the Revolution might have been unwittingly more continuous than discontinuous with the "Old Regime" that it invented, inventoried, and tried hard to bury. What is rather in question is whether the nature of the Old Regime can be reduced to monarchical absolutism, or even whether the Old Regime's many critics of absolutism can be reduced to philosophes or the Enlightenment.
