Chapter 5: Diverse Families/Similar Families Race     Ethnicity     - nonbiological traits- such as shared ancestry, culture, history, language, patterns of  At least 75% of US blacks have some white ancestry of those differences boundaries that distinguish group members from nonmembers, the perceived position of our  ashamed of Race is a social construction Multiracial Identities Hypodescent rule     - determinant of racial identity of ppl w/mixed-race backgrounds, whereby an  individual is always assigned the status of the subordinate group Study of 1,500 offspring of Asian Anglo couples found that the majority of these children (52%)  identified themselves as Anglo According to the US Bureau of the Census, 1.6% of the population- or about 4.7 million ppl-  identify themselves as belonging to 2 or more races Native American Families 14 th Native Americans were excluded from citizenship 1940 were all Native Americans born in the US considered US citizens life there can be bleak Deaths from cirrhosis of the liver- a disease associated w/sever alcoholism- are 2x as high  among Native Americans as among the rest of the population African American Families o From their purely economic perspective, slave owners had an interest in keeping slave  families intact o It was believed that “married” slaves would want to have children o Children had economic value b/c they represented future slaves o “Married” slaves were thought to be more docile & less inclined to rebel or escape
