Chapter 11: Childhood and Adolescence  Images of Childhood Childhood- stage of development that precedes adolescence & adulthood; a social category subject  Such a universal feature of human life that it is easily considered a natural stage of development Children as Miniature Adults Notion of childhood as a distinct phase of life didn’t develop in Western culture until the 16 th th  centuries Between the 14 th th other documents were sparse Children were often expected to participate in all aspects of social life right alongside adults Colonial period in this country, children often worked right alongside adults, doing the same work “Unsentimental” treatment of children probably had a lot to do w/the demographic realties of the  time Until the 18 th Children were expected to “earn their keep” 1825 the 1 st  House of Refuge was founded, an institution whose purpose was to provide sanctuary  to children who had been abused or neglected Children as Little Monsters In medieval Europe infants were often considered inherently corrupt, occasionally referred to as  unformed animals or “exasperating parasites” Contemporary image of the “little monster” is likely to refer not so much to children’s sinful nature as  to their latent destructive capabilities Children as Natural Innocents Late 18 th th  centuries- famous French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau portrayed  Mid 19 th children were neither miniatures adults nor naturally evil
