Unformatted text preview: DRAFT (Chap 7) Page 1 Chap. 7 Tools for using balanced equations: Avogadro’s number = 6.022 x 10 23 (strict definition – “the number of atoms contained in exactly 12 grams of 12 C.)” 1 doz eggs = 12 eggs 1 mole eggs= 6.022 x 10 23 eggs (there are not that many eggs in the world!) 1 mole Carbon atoms = 6.022 x 10 23 carbon atoms 1 mole of CH 4 molecules = 6.022 x 10 23 CH 4 molecules Some units we use for molecules and atoms and for moles of molecules and moles of atoms : For molecules and atoms use: Atomic Mass Unit: amu (very small unit = 1 g divided by 6.022*10 23 ) For moles of molecules and moles of atoms use: Gram: g (sometimes we use kg) DRAFT (Chap 7) Page 2 Molecular weight (amu)-- the sum of the masses of all the atoms in the molecular formula (molecules) Formula weight (amu)– the sum of the masses of all the atoms in the ionic formula (ionic compounds) The above two are basically the same, however, to be strictly correct, an ionic compound is not a “molecule.” Remember we use ionic formulas to represent the ratios of ions in an ionic compound.
