Class of October 27, 2010 Geographically, the north is richest part of the World. Imperlism: the relationship characterized by the control and influence of on state over another. Example of Empires: o Egypt o Greek o Roman o Babylonian o China Purpose: conquer everthing you can Empires build near a water area Early Colonialism: 1492 to 1600 o Supplant the population with your own population o Kill them by diseases o Set your own industries o Extract resources and raw materials and get the colonies to buy industrial good from the mother country o Mercantilism o US, Canada, etc. Late Colonialism: 1850 to 1914 o Treaty of Berlin o Scramble for Africa o Keep the balance in Europe o Keep population o Complete economic and political power o Involve countries more on the production side o Get raw materials and resources o Focus was on free trade o Pax Brittanica o Breaking up Africa into units
