The last five years of my life seem like clips from a horror novel. I wake up every night drenched in sweat reliving over and over again the hell that my life became. The councilors at the embassy tell me that time will heal my wounds, but I’m not so sure. My name is Sarah Wilder, I’m 16 years old and the year is 1945. I’ve been living in a small apartment in New York with an American family that took me in after my escape from Auschwitz concentration camp last year. I still can’t believe that I made it out alive. I remember it like it happen yesterday. It was a rainy Saturday in June of 1940 in Amsterdam. I was sitting at the table with my mother, father, brother (Jeremiah) and little sister (Rachel) having breakfast before going to the Synagogue. Our neighbor, Otto, came to tell us the news of the German occupation invading Amsterdam. My father was outraged. My mother whisked us away immediately so that Father and Otto could talk privately. Jeremiah and I tried so hard to listen to their conversation, but Rachel wouldn’t have it. She was too young to understand and she had a thousand questions that we didn’t have the answers to. After Otto left, Father tried to explain what was happening. I didn’t understand any of it. I was scared and this was just the beginning. All of our freedoms and rights were being withdrawn right before our eyes. On April 14
