Aquatic food chain/efficiency of food chains: The food chain is only 10% efficient. This is because as you move up the food chain, energy is lost to heat. By the time you reach the tertiary consumers at the top, only 10 calories of what started out as 10,000 calories will remain. The food chain begins with producers like SAVS, then primary consumers like plankton or small fish, then secondary consumers like large fish, then tertiary consumers like ospreys or eagles. Advantage of having planktonic larvae: Advantage: can move to potentially find new habitats Disadvantages: very small- easily eaten or swept out of bay. Horseshoe crabs: 1. Can be ground up for fertilizer 2. Provide food for migratory birds 3. Provide shelter for small organisms that live on/in its shell 4.
