Chapter One Psychology: the science of thought and behavior Pedagogy: the science of teaching Psychology and pedagogy are intertwined and equally important to education. The re- lation must be mutual and reciprocal, with teachers holding to a contemporary psycholo- gical perspective. Must be grounded in realistic situations. Educational psychology: dedicated to learning across the life span in all its formal and informal manifestations The 14 learner centered psychological principles: describe critical tenets for integrat- ing psychology and pedagogy Research support falls into six areas: Development and individual differences Knowledge Strategic processing Motivation and affect Situation or context Assessment Educators who are successful in fostering students’ growth and development have: A sense of how learning unfolds Extensive instructional techniques and approaches The capacity to stimulate thought, spark engagement, and address diversity Competence to analyze, create, or choose tasks, texts, and tests that are appropri- ate for learners and for instructional goals Contemporary psychological perspective: teachers with this perspective think about how the social and instructional contexts of the classroom affect and are affected by in- dividual students’ knowledge, strategic processing, development, motivations, sociocul- tural backgrounds, principles, and theories of educational psychology Effective educational practice comes from the marriage of theoretical and practical knowledge- a “realistic approach”. Includes questions, problems, and issues that teach- ers and learners face Problem: the body of psychological concepts, principles, and theories is vast and ever expanding Four areas of psychological research important to educational reform: Cognitive and metacognitive factors Motivational and affective factors Developmental and social factors Individual differences Principles: broad, encompassing statements that put complex ideas into simple lan- guage Information: the universe of facts, concepts, or images found in the external environ- ment and, thus, available to be taught or learned Knowledge: what an individual or group culls or constructs personally from that uni- verse of information Folklore has it that information doubles about every 5 years
