Jamie Weiss 04.06.09 MUET200, Sec. 0103 Performance paper outline Magdalen Hsu-Li March 31, 2009 1) Introduction/Thesis a) Discuss the various uses of music and importance of it in American culture b) Besides music being a large aspect of our culture/ form of entertainment, musicians use music to send messages and express their point of view/identity c) One example of this artist is Magdalen Hsu-Li an Asian American artist. d) Magdalen Hsu-Li expresses her gender identity as well as ethnic identity through the music that she plays. 2) Background on genre/musician: a) Grew up in Virginia, one of three Asian families b) Difficulties due to tourettes syndrome c) Initially interested in art/painting, went to art school in Rhode Island. . then went to Seattle to pursue music after having a dream about doing so d) One of the first Asian-american performer who sings contemporary/pop folk e) Bisexual, believes we can always redefine ourselves, performs all over the country at universities/tours, cultural activist 3) Performance a) Performed music while also sharing her story about her background, culture and life. b)
