The Scientific Method -A scientific hypothesis is a statement that means to explain the cause of a pattern or relationship. To verify a statement scientist use the deductive method (scientific method). When hypotheses are plausible, they become theories. -Correlation does not equal causation 1. Identifying the Problem/Observation 2. Collection of Background Information 3. State Your Hypothesis 4. State Your Predictions 5. Testing Your Predictions – Develop and conduct an experiment, in which data is collected to confirm or reject predictions. Must have a control which is subject to all the same conditions as the experimental trials, but does not undergo changes made with variables. Controls allow the consideration of other factors. 6. Drawing Conclusions 7. Reporting your Conclusions B. Components of a Formal Research Report 1. Summary-a brief summary of the goals methods and the results of the investigation
